URPG April Battle Update

Hello everyone! In the interest of transparency, as well as involving members of the battle section more, we've instituted this changelog to be the roadmap of things we're planning as well as things that have changed!

Novice League is coming soon!

In the next 48 hours, the Novice League will hit the URPG Infohub. Bear with us as we edit any forum and Infohub threads! Once the announcement is made, the Novice League will be open for applications!

Changes to Gym/Tourney Pay

Gym Pay is changing to increase for everyone, including the referee, once Novice League releases. The new payouts will be:

Winner / Loser / Referee

3v3: $2,500 / $1,500 / $2,500
4v4: $3,500 / $2,000 / $3,000
5v5: $4,500 / $2,500 / $3,500
6v6: $6,000 / $3,500 / $5,000

We feel this sets gyms aside from E4/Champion pay still, while providing a stronger incentive to get your gym battles in! This will apply to both Advanced and Novice League gyms, as well as Battle Frontier and Legend Defender.

Additionally, we're standardizing all further Tourney Payouts to be the new gym payouts. We felt that refs weren't properly incentivized to ref tourneys, and felt that there should be some uniformity in payouts.

Legendaries in the Elite Four/Champion battles

Effective when the Novice League releases, Legendaries will be banned from Elite Four and Champion battles. If the E4/Champ in question and the challenger both wish for Legendaries to be turned back on for a single battle, they may consult a Senior Referee.

What's Coming Next

To offer you all a glimpse of what we're working on, we have a few things coming up that we're excited to bring to URPG! These include:

-A July battle event, which at the moment is a WIP based off of an idea by our own evanfardreamer!
-A small rework to the Battle Frontier in terms of replayability, overall engagement, and rewards.
-(Tentative) a new Tournament!
-A look at Battle Royals, and what we can do to make them more appealing.
-Working with Dungeons to help release the project, which has recently seen a change in leadership!

New and Old, Senior Ref staff changes

A bit late, but Gold is now a Senior Referee!

Additionally, Elrond has stepped down from the role. We wish him well on his future endeavors, and thank him for his service!

How can we do better?

We'll be running a poll for the remainder of April on ways we can improve or initiatives we can run. Feel free to respond to the poll here.

That's all from us!

Thank you everyone for making the Battle section what it is, and we look forward to serving you in the months to come.

URPG May Battle Update

Hello everyone! This one's a big one! Lets hop right into it...

Battle Frontier 2.0: The Repeatening

First things first, we're completely revamping the Battle Frontier!
  • The Battle Castle will be added, bringing the total number of facilities to five.
    6v6
    S/M Private Full
    Helds On
    No Starting Weather
    Default Terrain
    Sleep/Freeze/OHKO/Accuracy/Evasion Clauses
Defender’s Choice: Singles/Doubles/Triples, Preview vs Full, Item/Mega/Z-Move/Species Clause

Spend Wisely!: Players bring their own Pokémon to the match, but all their EMs and Items are wiped. They are given a budget and must send their purchased list (and which EMs go on which mon) to the ref before teams are previewed (if playing preview). (300k Budget for Items/EMs/HAs)

  • The Battle Pyramid will be changing rulesets:

Both players may CHOOSE any Legendary/Mythical/Ultra Beast other than: Rayquaza, Arceus, Mew, Groudon, Kyogre, Necrozma, Lugia, and Mewtwo. Both players will declare their legends to the ref with their Pokemon sends (this choice will remain private until then).
Additionally, the following Pokemon may not be used: Greninja, Blaziken, Metagross, Espeon, Ditto

    6v6
    S/M Private Full
    Helds On
    No Starting Weather
    Default Terrain
    Sleep/Freeze/OHKO/Accuracy/Evasion Clauses
Defender’s Choice: Singles/Doubles/Triples, Preview vs Full, Item/Mega/Z-Move/Species Clause

  • A new Bronze/Silver/Gold tiering system will be implemented; each challenge progressively gets harder.
  • There will be a 2 week minimum between rechallenges on each facility.
  • You must complete all 5 bronze challenges to do any silvers, all silvers to do any golds.
  • If you beat all 5 Bronze challenges, free Medium Pokemon; All Silvers, free Hard Pokemon; All Golds, free non-legendary Pokemon
  • Free item for beating a Frontier Brain is removed; replaced with Mart Coupon (2k for Bronze, 4k for Silver, 6k for Gold)
  • Type of Challenges:

Bronze Challenges: What we have currently (These will grandfather in in the new system).

    Pyramid:
    Bronze: See above.
Silver: Defender can ban one extra non-legendary Pokemon of their choice
Gold: Defender sees Challenger's choice before picking (challenger does not see defender's pick)

    Factory:
Silver: Defender may reroll three mons after they see their team, their choice
Gold: Defender may turn off Mega and Z Clauses before the rolls, if they do remove Mega they're guaranteed 1 Mega mon in their rolls

    Dome:
    Silver: May change to Singles
Gold: Can change any rule, or add any rule

    Hall:
Silver: Reroll one of your rolled types
Gold: Remove 3 types from your pool

    Castle:
Silver: The challenger has a 225k Budget.
Gold: The challenger has a 150k Budget.

  • Battle Frontier Brains will be considered to have defeated their own facility for rewards.

Battle Royal Rework

Tier system is removed; Battle Royals will move to being a fun game mode like Wonder Launcher and whatnot. While we would've liked to keep the spirit of the Royals, it didn't match the current vision for the section. We will be working on bringing a startup guide and clearly define the rules shortly.

Ref Pay bumped to 5k from 3k. Battler pay is changed to:
4th: 1.5k
3rd: 3k
2nd: 4.5k
1st: 6k

Game Mode Incentivization

We're incentivizing using the other game modes as well!

GSC, RSE, Doubles, Triples, Multis, Sky, Inverse, and Rotation now award better pay:
+500 per participant if one is used in a 6v6, +1k each if two or more are used in a 6v6, +500 if two or more in under 6v6

Gameboy and Wonder Launcher will only award an extra $500 if used with another of the aforementioned rules; otherwise, they award regular pay.

URPG Street League
  • Orange Islands will be removed effective immediately; their badges may be saved if wanted, but may not be used for anything.
  • OI will be replaced with a League that has no maximum size, which leaders can apply for freely.
  • Leaders can choose what their gyms are called, and every single rule for their gym. This league will not operate with badges.
  • Defeating a Street League gym will award a TM voucher (only on the first defeat, similar to gyms). Beating at least 4 gyms in the league will reward a simple Pokemon.
  • Leaders may also choose weird rules, similar to an FFA but allowed to be more restrictive (e.g. “Pokemon that are UU on Smogon for SM only”, “Gen 1 only”, etc); they must post in the gym thread to change these rules after applying.

As a guideline, the more complex a rule is the less likely it is to be approved without asking for specific reasoning. Some examples:

Good - UU mons only, Random effects every turn, rentals like factory, most approved FFA rules (that apply to singles/doubles/whatever the leader runs), perma Trick room, etc

Bad - perma taunt, ban on certain moves, you can only use pokemon below X speed, anything that functionally changes any pokemon or mechanics (in any complex way), etc

Novice League Update

Novice League is off to a great start! Just a small update: Novice League gyms will have Legend Clause Default ON. Apply today!

What's Coming Next

To offer you all a glimpse of what we're working on, we have a few things coming up that we're excited to bring to URPG! These include:

-A June battle event, which at the moment is a WIP based off of an idea by our own evanfardreamer!
-A new Tournament!
-A potential Wildcard revamp!
-Continuing to work with Dungeons to help release the project.

A few clarifications on the above, as well as some additions
  • The Gym League (Advanced and Novice) will run on a similar system to the old one in terms of rechallenging a person:

Say I beat Ash in Flying. If Ash moves to Fire, I can challenge him again for a Fire Type Badge. However, if he swaps back to Flying, regardless of if he takes a different gym name or badge, I cannot challenge him again (for a badge).

The Street League will run similarly; if you beat Liam running a UU only gym, you cannot beat Liam for a TM Voucher + progress if he changes his rule to have bans. You can, however, beat Liam for a TM Voucher + progress if he changes to a Perma Trick Room rule.

  • Gold will be the LO for the Street League
  • Battle Pyramid will have a One Legend Only Clause On at all times. The legend rented will have all EMs and HA unlocked.

    How can we do better?

Remember to feel free to contact any Senior Ref if you have questions/concerns about the Battle Section, and especially with ways we can improve!

    That's all from us!

Another great month for battles! See ya out there!

URPG November Battle Update

Hello Refs, Battlers, and everyone in-between! In anticipation of Generation 8, we have a few updates we'd like to share with you!

URPG 1st Budget Gym Tourney

The Battle Section will be hosting a tourney in December! This tourney is designed to be friendly towards newbies and veterans alike, and we're excited to get the ball rolling! Signups will go out late November, with most of the Tourney taking place in December. DO NOTE: This tourney will have semi-strict timing on rounds. If you encounter an issue an SR will be willing to work with you, but a delay of anywhere near a week will result in forfeiture.

See the details for the tourney here! URPG Budget Gym Tourney

Changes to Rayquaza, Kyogre, and Groudon.

Right now, there are a couple of outliers in the system that we want to address. They are Mega Rayquaza, Primal Groudon, and Primal Kyogre. These Pokemon cause issues since they were (of course) not designed with the URPG system in mind, so we want to tweak them in a way that preserves their power/identity while bringing them more in line.

Mega Rayquaza
Problems
In-game, Mega Rayquaza is required to take up a valuable move slot in the 4-move system with Dragon Ascent in order to Mega Evolve. In URPG, since Dragon Ascent is an MT, this means Rayquaza only needs a $4,000 EM in order to Mega, while still being able to hold a supplementary item.
Normal Rayquaza has exploitable weaknesses while still being a top-tier legendary. Mega Rayquaza, meanwhile, due to its enduring ability and naturally high stats, has trouble finding counters even in other legendary Pokemon, especially when it has the capability to hold a power-enhancing item like Life Orb or a sustain item like Leftovers (especially on a Flying type without Roost).

Primal Groudon & Kyogre
Problems
While not nearly as problematic as Mega Rayquaza, Primal Reversion does not currently count toward a Mega slot, while essentially giving all of the same benefits as a Mega Evolution. This allows for overly-oppressive team-building in being able to have what is essentially two Megas (or as many Primal Reversions as you have the legends for).

Effective immediately,
  • Mega Rayquaza will now need to be holding a Meteorite ($2,000, currently used to switch Deoxys Formes) in order to evolve. The Meteorite will not be 1 time use when used with Rayquaza. The Meteorite, when held by Rayquaza, will function identically to a Mega Stone.
  • Anyone currently with a Rayquaza that will be keeping it after these changes will receive a Meteorite free of charge.
  • Primal Reversion will now count as Mega Evolution.
  • For those currently owning Rayquaza, Groudon, or Kyogre, you will be allowed a free swap to a different legend, if you so choose. This swap will be posted to the Refund Thread, and will follow the below rules:
The Legend's current EMs may be swapped out 1:1. Daycare EMs can be swapped for another Daycare EM, and TMs can be swapped out for a valid TM of the same value. Any extras that cannot be spent or applied are refunded.
Refunds will only work on instances where there are no more existing equal-value options that can be applied. For example, you cannot choose to not swap out a 2.5k TM on the first legend with a valid option on the switched one just because you do not like a TM/move. You may opt not to, but it will forfeit the value, not refund it. If you would like to retain/transfer the value, you must transfer it to a valid move where available.
You may add the Legend to your stats, and remove Rayquaza/Groudon/Kyogre, once a Staff Member has approved it.

Changes to Legend Defender.
  • Current LD Champions (Ash K. and Synthesis) will no longer be able to challenge for Legend Defender.
  • Legend Defender will now only require 10 wins for a permanent legend, but will need to have fought 7 unique challengers.
  • People will not be able to challenge LD unless they have 6 Pokemon and have been a member of URPG for at least one month.
  • All other aspects of LD will remain the same.

Battle Frontier Update

Just a small update here!

-When Challenging the Pyramid, both the Defender and Challenger may rent up to one (1) item relevant to their Legendary (Latiasite, Adamant Orb, etc).
-Reminder that other than Pyramid, Legends are always barred from Battle Frontier.

Referee Wages

There was recently a problem with Referee wage timings. When discussing with the Contest section, it was decided that Referee wages will remain at a biweekly timing, while judge wages move to a monthly timing. Referee wages will always be every other Sunday, around midnight EST, unless otherwise notified. There may be special wages done around auctions or other events; these will be formalized and published early to avoid any confusion.

Maylee Weekend November 8-10th: Perma Trick Room

Starting Thursday 11:59PM CST, We will be having a Maylee Ladder weekend. We will be using the same rules and elo ladder as before, but with an added rule: Trick Room will be permanently on the field, and cannot be removed! Box submissions will go up soon, and there will be prizes!

More small Refpedia changes

Just a quick note that we're formalizing some past announcements in the Refpedia!
  • Refs may not pick up any more battles if they have more than 1 battle waiting to be logged.
  • Ref Tests pay 2k to the tester.
  • Legend Clause may not be turned on in FFAs. Legends may still not be sent in FFAs like DEvo where they don't qualify.

What's Coming Next

To offer you all a glimpse of what we're working on, we have a few things coming up that we're excited to bring to URPG! These include:

-Working with Game Design on Generation 8, in terms of the calc and refpedia.
-Working with Game Design on rankings for Generation 8 Pokemon, and potentially some rank shifts and mechanics updates.
-Continuing to work with Dungeons to help release the project.

How can we do better?

Remember to feel free to contact any Senior Ref if you have questions/concerns about the Battle Section, and especially with ways we can improve!

That's all from us!

We're looking forward to Generation 8, and the myriad fun changes that come with it! Thanks for supporting the battle section!

URPG December Battle Update

Hello everyone! Welcome to the release of Dynamax, the Tourney, and the Gym/Wildcard Update! Let's dive right in!

URPG 1st Budget Gym Tourney

Budget Gym Tourney Signups are now open! Signups will happen in this thread: Budget Gym Signup Thread!

See the details for the tourney here! URPG Budget Gym Tourney

Dynamax comes to URPG!

Dynamax has been added to URPG! Make sure to check the Reffing Encyclopedia for the mechanics of Dynamax, and check out the new Moves page (linked below) for all Dynamax BPs!

Imprison Clause

With the additions and distribution that Imprison got in Sword and Shield, we felt Imprison has long overstayed its welcome in a Competitive URPG format.

Effective immediately,
  • Imprison Clause will fully prevent Imprison from being used. Referees must prompt battlers to choose a new move if Imprison is selected. Imprison may not be selected by Sleep Talk/Metronome/Assist, and will cause a reroll if rolled.
  • Imprison Clause will be automatically be turned on for any Gym, Battle Frontier and Elite Four/Champion matches. This may not be removed.
  • Imprison Clause may be turned off for Casual Battles, as well as Street League Gyms.

Gym and Wildcard Revamp

With Gen 8 upon us, and many discussions on Wildcards, we had decided to revamp the current Wildcard system. Our design philosophy was to provide Gyms with a Wildcard that would assist them in defending their gyms, while also providing fun picks. We settled on 3 to 4 per gym; the first in the list is the Wildcard that provides the biggest bump in viability to each gym, while the last Wildcard is the more fun oriented or thematic pick. You will notice that quite a few have remained the same, especially the viability ones.

Additionally, Mega Wildcards have been removed, but you might notice that some still remain in the list. All Wildcards will now no longer be required to hold any item, and may choose freely per battle.

Another update is that Silvally will now be fully banned from every Gym, including Normal. It may be used by challengers only.

Without further ado, here are the new wildcards!

FINALLY, BIG GYM CHANGE. As with past gens, new options mean new Pokemon to slot into a lineup, and choosing 15 has become even harder. To assauge this, Gym lineups will now consist of 16 Pokemon instead of 15. Go ahead and add that new Gen 8 mon without dropping one!

Move Updates

Just laying down some rules for weird moves that we haven't explicitly defined yet.

Assist: In an Open match, unless all spots are filled, Assist has a chance to call a random move from any random Pokemon in the user's stats. (Roll for active slot first, then mon, then move).

Beat Up: In an Open match, Beat Up's BP for each unsent will be set at 12. The user and any sent Pokemon will calculate as normal.

Big Refpedia changes

Moves, Abilities, and Items now have separate pages on the Infohub.

Moves
Abilities
Items

Elrond will be adding these options to the Infohub Dropdown Menu asap.

What's Coming Next

With Dynamax's release, and the Tourney, we don't have much else going on right now! If you want something to be addressed by the SR team, please don't hesitate to reach out!

That's all from us!

Thanks as always for supporting the battle section, and go have fun with Dynamax!
